Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
-The Beatles, 1968
Welcome to Blackbird’s Flight! Please, make yourself at home. Here you will find a space that is aiming to amplify marginalized, and often ignored & unheard, voices. Whether that be through book recommendations, writings here on the site, links to various resources available to those in need, or just finding a community in the comments, I seek to help others like me to feel more comfortable in the space that we occupy in this life.
I openly admit that this journey I’m embarking on is a new one to me, so I hope that you will all give me some grace as a find my footing here on this unfamiliar online terrain! As such, your feedback and suggestions as always welcome, so long as they come from a place of kindness and a genuine nature.
Along the menu bar at the top of the page are the main topics we are delving into. These include:
Knowledge is POWER: In this section of the site, you will find: books that are currently being banned or challenged in our country’s school & public libraries, books that explore the “other side of history” that our educational system often overlooks, books that feature main characters that are not often given equal visibility & representation, and books that explore world views and cultures that are not often given a spotlight in American culture.
The Library: This page compiles all of the books we are including in our Knowledge is Power library into one place so that no one needs to scroll through every post on the main page. Presented in alphabetical order, each title will be a link directly to a page devoted to that book. Each book’s page will include all the information needed to locate copies for your own libraries at home, as well as links to purchase from online sources.
Women Empowering Women: Here you will find posts devoted to: our physical & mental health, social issues, reproductive rights, relationships, all facets of navigating this world as a woman.
Take Note: This page will feature current news events from around the globe that feature or impact women and other marginalized communities, as well as interesting historical stories and personal profiles from members of these groups.
Community: TBD…this space is still being visualized!
So, once again, welcome! Pull up a comfy chair, a cozy blanket, a beverage of choice and explore. Pardon the “dust” so to speak as the site takes shape around us and builds a inviting and safe space for us all.
